In many areas, two abundant natural elements can be combined to create a soothing and tranquil water feature; a rock fountain. This type of landscape feature will bring years of enjoyment to the homeowner as well as bring a vital source of water to the area’s wildlife.
Creating your own design for a fountain will be a satisfactory experience every time you enjoy the burbling sounds of cascading water and the sights of birds and butterflies fluttering around the misty water. In just one day, you can construct your own water feature that makes use of the most natural elements on earth, water and rocks. This type of fountain will be compatible and cohesive with the aesthetic appearance of the yard while providing an added beauty of the water flow.
You will need to prepare ahead of time by choosing the ideal location for your water feature. It will likely be the focal point of your yard, so select an area that is highly visible yet also close to an electrical source. Some digging will be required to place a container that will be the pooling portion of the fountain. Materials needed for the fountain include a small plastic container, a metal hog panel, chicken wire, one large and assorted medium sized field stone, a submersible water pump, tubing and hand tools such as a drill with bits, a shovel and pliers.
After digging the hole for the container, place the container into the ground, ensuring that it is level and snug fitting. Cover the hog panel with chicken wire forming a grid, bending the wire over the ends to secure. Attach the tubing to the water pump and place the pump into the plastic container so the tube is facing upwards. Position the prepared grid over the container; pull the end of the tubing through the center of the grid.
The large field stone will provide the base of the rock fountain. A hole can be drilled through the center of the stone in which the tube will be inserted. If preferred, two halves of a large stone can be placed side by side with the tube securely positioned between them. The tubing should not be visible. Now simply place the medium stones on the large stone, fill the container with water and start the pump. Adjust the placement of stones and add plants around the feature for additional aesthetic beauty.
Combining two simple natural elements can create your own rock fountain providing great enjoyment in the soothing effects the burbling sound of water will bring to your yard.
