Environmentally Friendly Landscape Fountains

Public parks and common areas are often the focus for one of the most captivating features of the landscape: fountains. People tend to be drawn to these tranquil elements because of the soothing and beautifully properties that they offer, but many worry about the impact they have on our environment.

Water is one of nature’s elements that is irresistible to most individuals. We are instantly mesmerized by a waterfall cascading down a mountainous rock face, or by the rushing rapids in a rock littered stream. Millions of people vacation each year next to lakes, streams and oceans because of the appeal of nature’s most abundant feature. Fond memories are retained from these vacation getaways, largely due to the experiences and effects that the water provided. But these enjoyable moments do not need to be simply memories, not when they can be replicated by installing landscape fountains in your own yard. There are some, however, who feel that this type of use for such a valuable commodity to be wasteful, and in some areas that experience water shortages, a violation of the law.

Bringing the cooling and relaxing effects of a fountain to your yard can be as environmentally friendly as it is enjoyable to the homeowner. Wildlife such as birds and small creatures will be drawn to the sound of the spilling water and use it to bathe, drink and play. Butterflies and dragonflies are colorful and enchanting to watch; they, too, will find the fountain to be a source of hydration and be seen flitting about the falling streams of water. Even insects such as bees need water to drink, and can enjoy the fountain’s refreshing effects. The mist that is created from the fountain’s cascading motion provides evaporation that is vital to nearby plant life. The movement of the water also provides a cooling effect to its immediate surroundings; realistically providing a substitution to an indoor air conditioning system.

Self contained water features that re-circulate water through its system are not only aesthetically appealing but environmentally friendly as well be preserving nature’s most precious gift. There are virtually endless designs from which to choose; above ground, underground or a combination of both. Using an energy efficient submersible water pump will use less wattage per month, but installing a solar powered fountain will provide even more benefits by drawing its power from the naturally occurring sunlight rather than electricity.

It is possible to enjoy the tranquil effects of landscape fountains and still be environmentally friendly. Incorporating one of these impressive water features into your own yard will offer additional benefits to the wildlife as well as to your own enjoyment.
